A nice thing to listen to this week:

The Good Natured - Prism (2010's-ish)

image

Truly I don't have a lot of poetic fawning left in me to creatively chat about another late-2000's/early-2010's third wave britpop/dance punk/synthwave other than to say, once again, if you like that stuff, here's another one you I can almost certainly guarantee you didn't have on your list. The Good Natured only existed for a short period of time, and only officially released a handful of EP's before they were dropped by their label, losing the rights to their unreleased album, and then in turn changing their name and maybe mixing up the line up a bit? Hard to say really without going all investigative journalism. But about two years ago, that unreleased album appeared, and it's pretty dang good. I think you'll like it!

Terrific thing to watch:

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

image

I saw this film with my daughter, niece, nephew, sister, and parents in theaters during the 2022 Xmas season. We picked it only because it was the only kids movie in the theater at the time, and we wanted to get the cousins together during the holidays. To say I was not prepared is the understatement of the decade. A little more context: I am by and large not a fan of really any of the Dreamworks Animation films, but the Shrek series has always stuck out to me as a particularly annoying piece of pop culture. I'm not right in this feeling, I'm just a curmudgeon, and I have the decency to recognize that haha. So I went into PiB:TLW with not only no real understanding of the characters, but a heart ready to dislike the film. Y'all, PiB:TLW is one of the most important animated films ever made. It's visually striking, terrifically voiced, and genuinely moving. From moment to moment, regardless of your expertise with screenwriting, guessing what will happen next is out the window. Characters and storylines will come completely out of left field and leave you completely floored that you're now all of a sudden, like, crying about them?! I'm trying not to spoil anything here, and trying to keep the hype train at least a little on the tracks, but I truly don't think I could overhype this movie. Any time I try to sell anyone on it, I have to start with "I know, I know, trust me I know. But really, it is that good." Run don't walk.

A good read:

DnDoggos - Scott Underhill (2024)

image

DnDoggos is basically just what it says on the tin: Dogs playin Dnd. Scott expertly blends the two story telling frameworks of the dogs at the table and the imaginary world they’re creating together, seamlessly moving between the two to bring to life the experience of playing a silly little adventure game with your pals. There are sorta two forms the DnDoggos come in: book and webcomic. And in a surprising (for this newsletter) twist, the books version isn’t just a compilation of the webcomics. They’re both unique takes on the same idea, with the same characters, in different formats with different stories. Either way you take em, check them out and you won’t be sad ya did. The second book just came out too!  Oh and there's a simplified version of Dnd that they've thrown together

And finally, our weekly pic of the pup, Apollo (at a puppy buddy's b-day!):

Be nice to each other, and we'll see you next week!
