The Good News, #9
Hello True Believers!
Welcome back to The Good News!
We've got another show soon! It'll be on 2/12, at Lost Lake, with Ripcords and Jumpin at the Shadows! We'll have a poster soon :)
Something fun to get lost in this week:
Ummm apparently the links in all these Good News' are busted because of a weird issue with blogger?! Sorry, I'll try to have that not happen anymore. Ah the charms of using old web tech :)
A nice thing to listen to this week:
Those Dancing Days - Daydreams & Nightmares (2011)
Yup, another indie dance record from 15 years ago that missed me by a country mile until recently. I can’t tell if my affinity towards this band is solely because I feel like the drummer drums exactly how I do (except she’s better haha). It’s poppy and peppy and dancy and I’d bet ya hadn’t heard it before. If you have, bully for you! ;)
Terrific thing to watch:
The Hobbit (1977)
This movie just rips. The soundtrack is incredible, the animation is undeniably astonishing, and the story moves at such a satisfying clip while touching all the tentpole moments of the story, it’s just a masterpiece. There isn’t a single thing about this movie I could complain about. Now, when I saw it as a kid, I was like 50% in. I just didn’t have the context for what makes it so special. So if it’s been a minute since you’ve seen it, do yourself a favor and pop it on and journey back to Middle Earth.
A good read:
This is a reimagining of the old Unico manga and anime films. If you're unfamiliar with the Unico property, don't feel left out in the dark: it hasn't ever really been the powerhouse property that other Japanese imports have been. But one way or another, the anime movies made their way to 80's and 90's local video rental shops across America, enough so that there was a foothold large enough to lever a wildly successful reboot manga-like series of graphic novels. We were a Unico house prior to the release of this graphic novel, and to say it brought light and wonder into our house in fully unexpected ways is an understatement. The movies are still fully worth your time, but if you're looking to get a taste of this odd little also-ran of the early imports, the graphic novel series (3rd one out this July!) might be your speed.
And finally, our weekly pic of the pup, Apollo:
Be nice to each other, and we'll see you next week!
Best,
Luke
